Common replacement parts for MTD electric walk-behind mowers

  • Cutting blade. The cutting blade fits on the motor shaft under the mower deck and spins to cut the grass during mowing. Replace the cutting blade if it's dull or damaged.
  • Battery. The battery provides electric current to sun the drive motor in cordless electric walk-behind mower models. Replace the battery if it fails to hold a charge or it won't recharge.
  • Battery charger. The battery charger recharges batteries used in cordless electric walk-behind mowers. Replace the battery charger if it doesn't power up or it doesn't provide current to recharge the batteries.
  • Drive motor. The drive motor spins the cutting blade to cut the grass. Replace the drive motor if it doesn't run when it gets electric current.

How to sharpen the blade on your MTD electric walk-behind lawn mower

  • Shut off the lawn mower and make sure the blade has stopped rotating. Remove the safety key and battery pack then remove the blade.
  • Tightly secure the cutting blade in a vise.
  • Wear work gloves to protect your hands and safety goggles to protect your eyes.
  • Carefully file the cutting edges of the blade with a fine tooth file or sharpening stone. Sharpen the blade at the original cutting angle.
  • Sharpen the cutting edges on both ends of the blade. File off equal amounts of the cutting blade edges from both ends so the blade remains balanced.
  • Check blade balance and continuing filing until the blade is properly balanced.
  • Reinstall the cutting blade on the lawn mower
