GE dishwasher not cleaning dishes
When your GE dishwasher isn't cleaning dishes as it should, there are a few steps you can take to improve performance.
- Load fewer dishes. Overloading is a common issue that prevents effective cleaning. Run a test load with fewer dishes, making sure items are spaced out for optimal water flow. Place glasses face-down on the upper rack, tilting them toward the center, and position plates on the lower rack facing inward. If you have hard water, consider using a rinse agent or water softener to prevent mineral buildup and film.
- Check water pressure and temperature. Low water pressure and cold water reduce the dishwasher's cleaning efficiency. Test your kitchen sink's pressure and check how quickly hot water flows. The ideal temperature for dishwasher operation is between 110 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit. If your water runs cold, let the sink run for a few minutes before starting the dishwasher.
- Clean the chopper blade. The chopper blade grinds up food particles, but it can get clogged with debris like popcorn kernels. A grinding noise from the pump indicates a possible clog. To inspect the blade, remove the lower spray arm and upper sump cover, then clear any debris. If the blade is damaged, replace it to restore proper function.
GE dishwasher won't start
If your GE dishwasher won't start, there are several potential causes you can check.
- Light switch beside sink. Some dishwashers are connected to a nearby light switch that controls power, usually next to the garbage disposal switch. Make sure this switch is turned on.
- Door latch. The dishwasher won’t start if the door latch isn't engaging properly. Inspect the latch for any damage or misalignment.
- Control board. A malfunctioning control board can prevent the dishwasher from operating. If the other components are working, the control board might need to be replaced.
