It was a bear but I wrestled it!
The boot seal spring broke and the drum broke the outer front tub - hence the replacement. Washer wasn't worth getting a repair company to do it so I tackled this bear myself. Although it took quite a long time to dismantle I got the tub replaced, machine back together and everything working. About $200 in parts total and hopefully another few years of service. Online repair videos were critical to the success.
