The old gear was pretty torn up due to the wrong lube being used. Bearing grease is NOT the right stuff as once it's mechanically displaced, it doesn't flow back to lubricate the gear. The hardest part about replacing this gear is getting the assembly out of the snow thrower. You have to remove the auger half from the machine, then unbolt the gear box assembly and then remove all the auger blades. REMEMBER which way they came off. You could get by with only removing one side, but working on the gear box is easier with all the blades off. Once the gear box assembly is out and auger blades are off, disassemble the gearbox and slide one half off the shaft. You may need to sand rust and imperfections on the shaft to get the gear box half off. I chose to remove both halves so I could clean out the old grease easier. I placed the end of the shaft on the work bench and tapped on the old gear with a plastic dead blow hammer and once it slid off the key, it fell right off the shaft. I cleaned all the grease out of the gear box halves, replaced the oil seals and applied a little RTV gasket sealant on the gear box and slid it all together. Snugged up the bolts and filled the gear box with about 3 ounces of 00 gear grease. When I put the auger blades back on I applied anti-seize to the shaft and shear pins. Put it all back in the machine and reassembled the machine and tested it out. Worked great. A few things to consider when going this far into the gear box. Replace the oil seals - they aren't expensive and easy to replace. Use the proper grease in the gearbox, My problem was someone used red bearing grease and once the grease was squeezed away from when the gears make contact there was no lubrication. 00 weight gear grease is what you want to use. It flows like honey, and a hobby syringe will help getting it in the small opening. Anti-seize on the shaft helps in case you need to disassemble again, especially shear pins. While you have access, replace the belts or at least closely inspect them.
