How to fix common Maytag dryer problems

  • Won't heat. If the air in your Maytag dryer isn't getting hot, the problem could be the timer or the electronic control board that controls the heat. A bad heater relay, blown thermal cut-off fuse, faulty thermistor, broken operating thermostat or failed high-limit thermostat can also prevent the dryer from heating. In most gas dryers, a blown thermal fuse prevents the burner from working.
Additional failures in a gas dryer that prevent heating are bad gas valve coils, a failed igniter or a faulty flame sensor.
In an electric dryer, a tripped circuit breaker can prevent the dryer from heating even though the motor runs. Our Electric Dryer Won’t Heat Troubleshooting Video provides tips to get an electric dryer heating again.
Sometimes the cause of heating problems is lack of dryer maintenance, such as removing lint from the lint trap after every load. Lint blocks air flow and can make the dryer overheat and blow a fuse—then the dryer won’t heat at all. Regular dryer preventive maintenance keeps the dryer operating efficiently and helps avoid heating problems.
  • Won't start. If you push the start button but the dryer won’t start, first make sure the door is shut tight. Dryers won’t start unless the latch senses that the door is closed. If your Maytag dryer still doesn't start, there are several possible reasons, from a door switch that's not recognizing that the door is closed to a failure in the main electronic control board. A broken power cord, failed push-to-start switch or a bad timer can also prevent the dryer from starting. In dryers that use a motor relay to control the drive motor, a broken motor relay can prevent the dryer from starting.
If you hear the motor running but the drum doesn’t turn, it’s likely that you need to replace the drive belt. (Some dryers use a belt switch to keep the drive motor from running; in that case, you might not hear the motor run when the drive belt breaks.) A failed drive motor also prevents a Maytag dryer from starting.
In electric Maytag dryers, a blown thermal fuse can keep the dryer from starting. Replace the thermal fuse if it's blown.
  • Won't turn off. The load is dry, yet the dryer keeps running. You may need to replace the timer or the electronic control board. If your dryer uses a mechanical timer and doesn’t stop when the dial reaches the off position, a failed contact in the timer is likely causing the dryer to continue running; replace the timer. If your dryer uses an electronic control, a stuck motor relay on the electronic control board can cause the dryer to run constantly with the dryer door closed. If the dryer stops only when you open the door, you probably need to replace the electronic control board.
If the dryer won’t turn off when you open the dryer door, the dryer door switch likely failed. Replace the door switch if it doesn’t accurately detect the door being open or closed.
