Common Maytag garbage disposal replacement parts

  • Batch-feed switch. The batch-feed switch starts the garage disposal when you turn the drain stopper.
  • Container O-ring. The container O-ring forms a seal between the container and the upper end bell.
  • Drain stopper. The drain stopper helps prevent water from draining from the sink and through the garbage disposal.
  • Shredder blade. The shredder blade attaches to the motor and spins to cut up food debris.

Troubleshooting tips for fixing your Maytag garbage disposal when it won't start

  • Push the motor overload reset button. The motor overload reset button is located on the bottom of the garbage disposal. The motor overload switch trips when bones or other objects jam the disposal blades and prevents the motor from spinning. Resetting the overload will allow the motor to get electrical current. If the motor buzzes but the disposal blades don't spin after pressing the reset button, you'll also need to free up the jammed disposal blades so the disposal will run.
  • Check the power supply. If the motor doesn't run or buzz after pressing the reset button, then the electrical outlet for the garbage disposal may not be working or the house circuit breaker for the outlet may be tripped. Reset the house circuit breaker for the garbage disposal outlet if the breaker tripped. If the house circuit breaker wasn't tripped, check the electrical outlet for power by plugging a night light or small appliance into the outlet. If the test item doesn't power up, then you'll likely need to have an electrician repair the electrical outlet. If the outlet works, unplug the garbage disposal and check the power cord for damage. Replace the power cord if you find frayed or cut wires. Check the power cord wiring connections and reconnect any loose wires.
  • Free up jammed garbage disposal blades. If the motor buzzes but the garbage disposal blades don't move, a bone or other object is likely jamming the blades. Unplug the garbage disposal and remove the splash guard. Check for items jamming the blades. Free up the blades by moving the blade turntable using a broomstick handle. Reassemble the garbage disposal and test it. If the garbage disposal won't spin its blades and nothing is blocking the blades, then you'll likely need to replace internal parts.
