Troubleshooting your Craftsman router when the bit binds, stalls the motor or kicks back

  • Check bit installation. Make sure that the bit is properly installed in the collet.
  • Check for bit damage. Examine the bit and replace it if the bit is dull or damaged.
  • The bit will bind up if the cut is too deep for one pass. If you're attempting a deep cut and the bit binds up, make the cut in two or more passes instead of just one pass.
  • Check the speed. Adjust the speed if it's too slow for the cut that you're attempting.
  • Adjust feed rate. Feed the work piece too fast can cause binding. Slow down the feed rate if necessary.

Common Craftsman router replacement parts

  • Carbon motor brushes. The carbon motor brushes transfer electric current to the spinning armature in the motor.
  • Bearings. The bearings support the drive shaft inside the motor housing to allow the shaft to spin.
  • Collet. The collet holds the router bit in place.
  • Chip shield. The chip shield attaches to the router to prevent wood chips from hitting the operator.
