Relatively Easy to Replace
This compactor power nut was the item needed to complete this repair. It is a durable hard plastic, threaded piece. To complete, you need a wrench or socket that will accommodate hex head screws to take off the top of the compactor lid. You also need to be able to hold the side of the compactor in an upright level position to attach the new nut to the top of the unit. In other words if you don't have the one-arm strength to hold up the unit and screw in the nut with the other hand and arm, you will need another assistant. Overall, it was an easy replacement. The cost is somewhat high, over $30 with shipping per power nut, however is better than the cost of a new compactor!

New Power Nuts fixed old Kenmore Trash Compactor
They shipped parts fast and accurate. Parts solved the issue (stripped Power Nuts for a 30 year old Trash Compactor) and now the machine works perfectly again.

It worked fine
The plastic nuts were easy to locate on the Sears Parts Direct web page. All that was needed was the model number. I was skeptical because the trash compactor was almost 30 years old.

Opps
Accidentally threw the parts in the trash. They were so light that did realize the bag it came in still had the parts.
