How to troubleshoot your Carrier air handler when it won't run

Check for power and reset the house circuit breaker for the air handler if it's tripped. If the air handler is getting power, check the thermostat settings and adjust the settings if necessary.

Check for water dripping from beneath the air handler. If water if dripping from the bottom of the air handler, then the condensate drain hose is likely clogged. A switch in the air handler shuts off the unit when the drain hose clogs and water backs up into the evaporator. Unclog the drain hose and the switch should reset so the air handler will run.

If these tips don't help, then a bad blower motor or a failed control board could be preventing the air handler from running.

Common replacement parts for Carrier air handlers

  • Air filter. The air filter traps dust and lint from air going to the evaporator.
  • Blower motor. The blower motor spins the blower wheel to circulate air through the evaporator and throughout your home.
  • Electronic control board. The electronic control board receives signals from the thermostat and cycles the air handler on and off as needed to maintain the set temperature in your home.
