Troubleshooting tips for common Magic Chef refrigerator problems

• Not running. If your Magic Chef refrigerator has electrical power—the inside light turns on—but the compressor won't run, possible causes include a control board failure, a wiring problem or a failed compressor. • Frost buildup in the freezer. If frost is building up in the freezer, check first for a break in the door gasket that could be letting in warm, moist air. If the gasket seems sound, a malfunction somewhere in the automatic defrost system could be the culprit. A failed defrost timer or a bad electronic control board may not initiate the automatic defrost cycle, causing excessive frost buildup on the back wall inside the freezer. • Won't make ice. Several problems can interfere with making ice—the ice maker could be jammed or broken, a dirty water filter or kinked water line could be blocking water flow, or the water inlet valve could be clogged or faulty. Check the ice maker for jammed cubes and clear any ice buildup that you find. Replace the ice maker assembly if it doesn’t cycle when activated. Replace the water inlet valve if it’s clogged or won’t fill the ice maker when activated. Replace any damaged or clogged water system tubing.

  No ice in the ice maker also could mean that your refrigerator isn’t cooling—the ice maker won’t cycle if the freezer is warmer than 5 degrees F.

• Not cooling well. If the refrigerator's not cold enough, first check whether containers are blocking air flow at the vents; the owner's manual usually shows where the vents are. High temperatures are also a sign of a control system problem, a failure in the air control damper, low refrigerant charge and other malfunctions.

• Evaporator fan motor. The evaporator fan blows air across the evaporator coils and through the refrigerator cabinet for cooling. Replace the evaporator fan motor if it won't run when activated.
• Ice maker. The ice maker is a complete assembly that contains the ice mold and the control device. It plugs into a wire harness in the freezer or the ice compartment. The ice maker receives water from the inlet water valve and then holds the water in the ice mold until the water is frozen solid. It then automatically ejects the ice and refills to continue the process until the ice storage bucket is detected as full.
• Defrost bi-metal thermostat. The defrost bi-metal thermostat is a safety device attached to the evaporator coil. The defrost bi-metal thermostat shuts off the refrigerator defrost heater if the heater gets hot enough to damage the evaporator.
• Defrost timer. The defrost timer is an electro-mechanical timer that controls the intervals between automatic defrost cycles in the refrigerator. The defrost timer motor runs and moves the components in the device. When the contacts for the defrost cycle are engaged, the compressor stops and the defrost heater turns on briefly to melt frost from the evaporator fins. Removing the frost promotes a more efficient exchange of heat across that component. When the fins are defrosted, the contacts disengage, allowing normal cooling in the refrigerator.
