- Thermistor. The thermistor is a temperature sensor in the air conditioner that sends information to the electronic control board.
Causes for evaporator fins icing up in a Whirlpool portable air conditioner.
The evaporator fins ice up if the compressor runs constantly for one of these reasons: a dirty air filter restricts air flow; the air conditioner is too small for the room; the temperature setting is too cold; a control is defective.
Clean or replace the air filter if it's dirty. Also clean the air inlet grille so air can circulate through the portable air conditioner easily.
Add an additional portable air conditioner to cool the space if the room is too large for the portable air conditioner that you're using.
Replace the electronic control board if it doesn't cycle the compressor on and off properly.
