Top-selling replacement parts for MTD rear-tine tillers

  • Recoil starter. The recoil starter is a starter system mounted on top of the engine that consists of a rope and spring-loaded pulley system. The person operating the tiller pulls the starter rope, which rotates the spring-loaded pulley and spins the crankshaft to start the engine.
  • Side shields. Side shields are metal plates attached to the sides of the tine shield that guide the tilled soil into even rows.
  • Spark plug. The spark plug ignites the air and fuel mixture in the engine of a gas-powered tiller.
  • Tines. The tiller tines are rotating metal cultivating blades that dig into the earth and turn over the dirt to prepare for planting or to incorporate soil amendments.

Replacing the tines on your MTD rear-tine tiller

  • Pull the spark plug wire off the engine spark plug.
  • Remove the wing nuts that secure the side shield to the end cover and remove the side shield. Remove the wing nut at the top of the tine shield end cover. Pull the tine shield end cover off.
  • Remove the cotter pin from the clevis pin and slide the clevis pin out. Pull the tines straight off the end of the tine shaft.
  • Slide the new tines onto the tine shaft. Line up the mounting holes in the tines with the holes in the tine shaft. Reinstall the clevis pin and secure it with the cotter pin.
  • Position the tine shield end cover on the tine shield and secure it with the top wing nut. Position the side shield on the end cover and secure the side shield using the wing nuts.
  • Reconnect the spark plug wire to the spark plug.
