Top failures that can affect your KitchenAid range

  • Won't work at all. If your KitchenAid range doesn't work at all, it's likely that the range has no electrical power for the display or controls. Possible causes are a tripped house circuit breaker for the range, a problem with the outlet cord (not plugged in or broken) or an internal wiring failure. A blown thermal fuse can prevent the control from powering up on some KitchenAid ranges. Some ranges have a relay control board that supplies power to the display and controls so a failed relay control board could prevent the range from working. For a KitchenAid electric range that won’t power up, check the terminal block on the back of the range for loose wires or broken terminals. Replace the terminal block if damaged.
  • Oven won't heat. A failed oven control thermostat or oven selector switch can prevent the oven from heating on a KitchenAid range that has dials for the oven controls. On a KitchenAid range with a digital display, a bad electronic control board or faulty oven temperature sensor probe may keep the oven from working. In an electric range, a broken bake element won’t heat the oven. Follow the troubleshooting steps in our electric oven won't heat video to find the cause of the oven heating problem. A weak oven igniter often prevents the oven in a gas range from heating.
  • Our gas oven won’t heat video provides troubleshooting steps to fix the oven in a Kitchen Aid gas range that uses a glow bar oven burner igniter.
  • Oven door won't unlock. If the door won't open when the oven cools down after self-cleaning, or when you try to disable child lock mode or control lock mode, the problem could be with the oven door lock assembly or the electronic control board. First shut off power to the oven and then check the wiring between the electronic control board and the oven door lock assembly. If the wiring is okay, replace the oven door lock assembly. If that does not fix the problem, you might need to replace the electronic control board as well. Here's a video that shows how to diagnose and repair a broken oven door lock

What to do when the oven isn't baking properly

If the oven isn't heating to the baking temperature you set—it's too hot or not hot enough—the oven temperature sensor could be malfunctioning. Or the problem could be with the electronic oven control board, which controls oven functions. You can test the oven temperature sensor probe by unplugging the range and measuring sensor probe resistance using a multimeter. You should measure about 1,080 ohms of resistance through most probes at room temperature. Refer to the tech sheet for the probe’s resistance specification for your range. You can likely find the tech sheet in the control console or taped to the back of the range. Replace the oven temperature sensor probe if you don’t measure the correct resistance through the probe. If the probe is okay, then you may need to replace the electronic oven control board.
