Testing dinnerware or cookware before use in a KitchenAid microwave hood combo

To test a dish or cookware for safe use inside your microwave, put it into the oven with a cup of water beside it. Start the microwave at 100% power for one minute. If the dish gets hot, do not use it.

Some dishes (melamine, some ceramic dinnerware, etc.) absorb microwave energy, becoming too hot to handle and slowing cooking times. Cooking in metal containers not designed for microwave use could damage the oven, as could containers with hidden metal (twist-ties, foil lining, staples, metallic glaze or trim).

Defrosting tips for your KitchenAid microwave hood combo

  • When using Auto Defrost, enter the net weight of the portion that you're defrosting (the weight of the food minus the weight of the container).
  • Make sure that you remove any metal such as twist ties from the item before starting the microwave.
  • Leave the container lid open. Slit or pierce plastic packaging. Slit the skins of foods such as sausages.
  • As food begins to defrost, separate the pieces of food so items defrost more easily.
  • Turn food over halfway through the defrost process to evenly defrost items top to bottom.
  • Let food stand for several minutes after defrosting.
