Radiant surface element doesn't work on a GE electric range

If a radiant element doesn't heat on your GE range, a failed element, wiring failure or a broken surface element control switch could be the reason the stovetop element’s not working.

• First, test the surface element control switch in the control panel. Unplug the range and measure resistance through the element control switch contacts that supply current to the element using a multimeter. Replace the element control switch if it isn't sending current to the radiant surface element.
• Check the surface element wiring. Lift the glass cooktop and check the wiring connections on the radiant surface element. Reconnect any loose wires. Check surface element wiring for damage and replace any damaged wires.
• Test the radiant surface element. Measure resistance through the radiant surface element. If the multimeter measures no resistance through the radiant surface element then you'll need to replace the element.

Diagnosing an oven heating failure in a GE gas range

• First, check whether the surface burners are working. If so, you know your oven is receiving gas, so the gas supply isn’t the problem. If the burners aren’t working, check the gas supply cut-off valve. If it’s open, contact your gas supplier to figure out what’s wrong.
  Some GE gas ranges have a service cut-off valve on the pressure regulator that shuts off the gas supply to the oven and not the surface burners. If your GE range has one, make sure that service valve is open.
• Next, check resistance on the safety gas valve. The safety gas valve should measure less than 5 ohms of resistance on most GE gas ranges. Replace the safety gas valve if the multimeter measures no continuity through the safety gas valve.
• If gas is flowing to the oven and the safety gas valve is okay, replace the oven burner igniter, which is under the oven’s bottom panel. Even if the igniter glows when you start the oven, it’s probably not getting hot enough to open the safety gas valve.
